WHY OUR ADOPTION PROCESS MATTERS

Why Our Adoption Process Matters

Protecting the well being of every dog in our care.
Our process may feel more detailed than some, but every step is designed to protect the dog and support you as an adopter.

Dog First,
Always

We look at each dog’s history, temperament, health, and individual needs to be sure the home we choose will truly be a good fit for them & their future.

We review applications carefully, check references when appropriate, and may visit the home to make sure it is safe and suitable.

We encourage questions, share what we know about each dog, and remain a resource after adoption so your new dog has best chance to settle in well.

HOW ADOPTION WORKS

How Our Adoption Process Works

A clear path from first meeting to bringing your dog home.

Step 1: Call Us to Set Up an Appointment
The first step in adopting is to call Friends of Falmouth Dogs and speak with a member of our team. We will answer your questions, learn more about what you’re looking for in a companion, and schedule a time for you to visit. All meet-and-greets are by appointment so we can give you our full attention and ensure the best possible match for you and the dog.
Step 2: Visit with Your Household
Meet the dog in person with everyone who will be living in the home. This visit allows us to see how the dog interacts with your family and helps ensure the right fit for everyone involved. All household members should be present so we can make the most informed and thoughtful match possible.
Step 3: Complete the Adoption Application
If you feel the dog is a good fit, the next step is to complete our adoption application. The application helps us learn more about your home, lifestyle, and experience so we can ensure a safe and successful placement.
Step 4: Application Review
Our team carefully reviews each application and selects the applicant who is the best overall match for the dog’s needs. Once a decision has been made, we will call to schedule your appointment to meet the dog again and move forward with the next steps.
Step 5: Home Visit and Adoption
Before finalizing the adoption, a home visit will be completed to ensure a safe environment for your new companion. Once approved, we will complete the adoption and welcome the dog into your family.

For dogs not able to be spayed or neutered before adoption, a refundable deposit will be collected and returned once the procedure has been completed. FFD will be responsible for the cost of the procedure.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What To Expect From The Process

A careful, not rushed, approach to adoption.

Because we match based on the dog’s needs, the process may take several days or longer. Timing depends on how many applications we receive, how quickly references are reached, and when home visits can be scheduled. Our goal is a stable, lasting placement rather than a quick decision.

Sometimes we receive more than one strong application for the same dog. Only one home can be chosen. A decision not to move forward with your application for that dog is not a judgment on your ability to provide a good home. We encourage you to ask about other dogs and to apply again.

While your application is under review, you are welcome to continue visiting the dog by appointment. Extra visits can help you and the dog become more familiar with each other and may make the transition home smoother if you are approved.

Questions are expected and welcome. If you need clarification at any point or want guidance on preparing your home, our volunteers are available to help. We want you to feel informed and confident about the decision to adopt.

ADOPTION QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Adopting

How long does the adoption process usually take
The timeline varies. It depends on how many applications we receive for a dog, how quickly we can reach references, and whether a home visit is needed. In many cases, the process can take anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks.
Why is adoption not first come, first served
Our responsibility is to the dog. We review all applications with the individual dog in mind and choose the home that appears to best meet that dog’s needs rather than the first person to apply.
What if I have questions during the process
You are welcome to contact us at any point. Whether you have questions about a specific dog, the steps involved, or how to prepare your home, our volunteers will do their best to provide clear, honest information.
What support is available after adoption
We encourage adopters to stay in touch. If questions or challenges come up as your new dog settles in, you can reach out for guidance or resources. Our goal is for every adoption to be successful over the long term.
